The Supreme Court is reviewing the Hobby Lobby case. Heres how I understand the issue: Hobby Lobby objects to the government compelling them to provide insurance which will pay for certain forms of legal contraceptives that Hobby Lobby considers abortifacients because they believe that the corporation are morally culpable if an employee uses the employer provided insurance to buy the objectionable forms of contraceptives and that the CEO of the corporation would be morally culpable for the sins of the corporation. The court is NOT examining the legitimacy of this belief. I, on the other hand, would like to examine the legitimacy of this belief. I am pretty sure this is a fringe belief that is not associated with more established branches of Christiantiy. So for the sake of this conversation, I call this religious belief a part of a new religious system called Hobby Lobbyism. Okay, now lets talk theology. Why should Hobby Lobby be morally culpable if an employee uses insurance to do something that Hobby Lobby finds objectionable? In this case, the sin is so far removed from any actual Hobby Lobby act that it seems to lack some element of proximate cause. Hobby Lobby paid for the insurance. Thats it. The employee chose to use the insurance for an objectionable purpose. The employee was not compelled to buy it by Hobby Lobby and most likely would purchase the drug some other way if they werent covered by employer insurance. And even if Hobby Lobby is morally culpable, should every shareholder in Hobby Lobby be liable? Why should the CEO be culpable? Shouldnt it also make a difference that the CEO didnt choose to provide the coverage, it is the government making that choice? What is the theology behind this belief? How far does this idea go? Is Hobby Lobby culpable is someone buys something in their store and uses it for Satanic worship? Is Hobby Lobby morally responsible if a man uses their insurance coverage to pay for Viagra and uses it in sin? Is there a book called the Code of Hobby Lobbyism Law that we can turn to for guidance?
