The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan which is meant to make India open - TopicsExpress

The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan which is meant to make India open defecation-free should start from the villages. It is the villages where people defecate openly in absence of household latrines, whereas in towns and cities problems are related to solid and liquid wastes. The focus of media-hyped symbolic cleaning programme is in towns and cities, whereas rural areas are silent spectators of this drama. The rural-folk also need a life full of hygiene and dignity. Hetona a premier voluntary agency of Garhwal Himalayas has started the SBA from villages by launching a massive awareness campaign on health, hygiene and environmental sanitation. In the series, first it was Mukhawa (almost 2500 Meter fom seal level) a village located near Gangotri and this one a most backward and interior village Katkhan situated on height of almost 2000 meter of Chiniyalisaur block of District Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand. At present there are only 2 household latrines in a village 39 households. Now the villagers have decided to construct 100% sanitary latrines within 6 months. Followings are the views of the meetings with villagers. (8.10.2014)
