The Tigers bounced back from the debacle in Kansa City to beat the Minnesota Twins in the opener of the 3 game series 4-0. All the scoring in this game took place in the top of the 6th. The Tigers had little luck with Twins starter Scott Diamond up until that point. In the top of the 6th with one out Jackson, who returned from the DL, was able to draw a walk on a 3-2 pitch. He went to 2nd on a tapper down the first base line by Tori Hunter. This brought up Cabrera who was put on intentionally by the Twins. With runners on 1st and 2nd Prince Fielder promptly blasted one off the wall which scored Hunter and Cabrera who appeared to run through a stop sign by 3rd base coach Tom Brookens. Martinez then doubled to left center to knock in Fielder. Peralta then brought home Martinez with a double past the Twins left fielder, Arcia. That was all of the runs Rick Porcello would need. Rick went 7 innings giving up no runs and only 3 hits. It was the 14 consecutive quality start by a Tiger starter. Smiley relieved Porcello in the 8th He was able to get Arcia but then walked ex-Tiger Clete Thomas and then Dozier got on on a catcher’s interference call. Leyland then went to the bullpen again and brought in Beniot who was able to get the next two Twin hitters to end the 8th. In the 9th Jim Leyland, as he is prone to do went back to Valverde. He walked Joe Mauer who was the first batter he faced. Then Doumint hit a shot on one hop to Peralta who easily turned the 6-4-3 double play. Valverde then hit Willingham but was able to strike out Morneau to end the game. The win allowed the Tigers to keep the pace with the Indians and Royals who also won their respective games. Game two is tomorrow night with Sanchez schedule to make the start.
