The True Heart of a Soldier A soldier has been trained to fight He has been trained to win at all costs Trained to be without emotion, without despair Throughout this life, a soldier will fight a great many battles Some of which he may not even be able to confront his enemy The greatest enemy to a soldier is his mind Although capable of moving mountains It is ever softened by the losses that he will surely experience War is not a “game” for boys; it is not even a “game” for men It is the pure and complete destruction of his very essence It is by war that men are born, many from gentle and innocent boys; forced to grow-up before their time and against their will It is only this growth that allows a boy to survive, to survive the unspeakable atrocities of the “Game” These grave atrocities will take their place among his heart Each making an indelible mark upon his soul and upon his life The heart of a soldier is a great many things, but easy to understand shall never be one A brotherhood forged in the trenches of battle is comparable to no other Only those who have stood shoulder to shoulder with their brothers can understand A soldiers’ heart will always remain steadfast Whether he is under fire from a known enemy or from an invisible foe Set out to destroy his very soul, the core of his being Emotion has little place in the heart of a solider It will become his weakness, a tool for his destruction and devastation It will cause the man to stumble to become unbalanced Unable to defend against the waves that life relentlessly toss his way Once filled of emotion a soldier’s heart can bear no more pain He is defenseless to the very desires of his soul An instinctive need to belong, to find his place among the crowd A soldier’s heart will suffer many pains; it will make many attempts to succeed but will only find failure among its treasures A soldier will always stand upright; he will stand among the few and among the proud Ready to do what is commanded of him with no cause for question It is this heart that will remain loyal to the one whom he chooses to be his own Rickie Dean Phillips 1/30/2014
