The Two Room Apartment and Little Mozarts When Donny Lama a local lad from Darjeeling was studying at Mt. Hermon School, he had heard about Gandhi Ashram School, Kalimpong, but he didn’t know much about it. Sehran Moshin who is originally from Patna, but grew up in Delhi had never even heard of Gandhi Ashram School, and both of them didn’t know each other. However their love for music brought them together and their quest for amazing music related story brought them to Kalimpong. Today with their permission we are sharing their story and the wonderful short documentary they made on Gandhi Asharm School, which is right now making waves across India. Son of Mr Mr Tshering and Mrs. Marmin Dolma Lama, Donny is as Darjeelingey as it gets, born and raised in Rajbari, and he completed his schooling from Mount Hermom. Sehran born to Mr. Nadeem and Mrs. Saboohi Nadeem grew up in Patna and Delhi, and completed his schooling from Somerville School and undergrad from Dayal Singh College in Delhi. After school Donny finished his undergrad degree from Hindu College in Delhi and Masters in Mass Communication from Jamia. Their paths crossed while working for MTV-VH1. While Donny was working on shows like Roadies, Splitsvilla, Stunt Mania, Teen Diva, MTV Rock On etc, Sehran conceptualised the online version of Roadies and MTV called him on board, and since 2007 they have been working together. Their life till that point had more or less been common to so many successful young guys... school, followed by college, followed by job, and then possibly marriage.... But that is when they decided to take a different turn in life, and instead of joining the rat race to climb up the proverbial corporate ladder, they decided to quit everything they were doing, and travel. Their aim was to pretty much travel “for as long as we can till we completely run out of money” says Donny, but instead of playing a typical tourist, they wanted to travel with a purpose – Collecting awesome music related stories from across India, and if money permitted across the world. In Bombay they had stayed together, in a 2 room apartment. Hence when they had to choose a name for their unique venture, they decided to go with... Yeah!! “The Two Room Apartment.” Basically they are a two man, completely portable production house/musicians. “We do everything on our own, from the creative’s, to pre production, to shoot and finally editing and recording music. We dont rely on anyone else apart from each other hence the name the two room apartment. Because we have everything we need,” Explains Sehran. Their quest for music related stories and musicians that needed a voice brought them to Darjeeling and then the obvious next stop was Gandhi Ashram School. Explains Donny, “We believe that music plays a very important part in our lives, and Gandhi ashram school was the perfect example, on how music can change your fate. More importantly this story really moved and inspired us and we wanted to share our version to the world like the way we felt....” That is what gave birth to the short documentary you are about to watch: “Little Mozarts,” which Sehran assures us is the first of the many. Gandhi Ashram School was founded by Fr Edward McGuire SJ, a Canadian Jesuit who wanted to establish a school of music, for children from poorest or the poor families. What Fr. McGuire started with about 11 students, today hosts about 315 girls and boys between the ages of eight and 17, and provides them with excellent schooling and musical training. The best thing about Gandhi Ashram School is that the school is completely free-of-charge, and the students are not required to wear uniforms, so that it’s not a burden on the parents. All the school expenses which includes highly qualified teachers, violin for each student, school supplies and three meals a day are met through donations. Local children go home everyday, while those who are from very far off places are even provided free stay. Amazing ain’t it? So what followed was this brilliantly visualized and crafted short documentary on Gandhi Ashram School, for which we thank The Two Room Apartment All of you will be happy to know that soon they will be releasing their version of Aint no Sunshine... Of course!! Accompanied by their unique style and presentation. Their future plans include collaboration with the students from Gandhi Ashram School on two of their songs and travelling to different places like Nepal and the North East looking for stories and music. Gentleman that they are, they invited us for coffee, and have promised to continue sharing their songs and stories via TheDC. So there you have it, the story behind “The Two Room Apartment and Gandhi Ashram School” .........................................
