The U.S. Embassy in Côte d’Ivoire is issuing this message in response to the confirmed cases of Viral Hemorrhagic Fever (VHF) caused by the Ebola virus in Guinea, and suspected cases in Sierra Leone and Liberia. There have been no reported cases of VHF in Côte d’Ivoire to date. The U.S. Embassy continues to monitor the situation closely with our health partners including the Government of Côte d’Ivoire’s Ministry of Health, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the World Health Organization (WHO). At this point, the WHO has not recommended any travel restrictions to Guinea or other countries in the region, but we urge you to exercise sound judgment with regard to travel, wash your hands frequently, and protect yourself if you are a healthcare worker. While Ebola is a dangerous virus, there are a few factors that would make an individual’s risk of contracting the disease negligible. Ebola is not spread by casual contact like the flu; it requires direct contact with the body fluids of someone severely ill with - or recently deceased from - the disease, or by eating contaminated bush meat.
