The U.S. Forest Service plans to conduct a prescribed burn this - TopicsExpress

The U.S. Forest Service plans to conduct a prescribed burn this weekend on 500-1,000 acres in the Croatan National Forest. The burn will likely take place off of Highway 24. The Forest Service plans to conduct additional prescribed burns in the coming weeks. Approximately 4,000 more acres will be burned to improve habitat for fire-adapted species, such as the red-cockaded woodpecker, and restore the longleaf pine ecosystem. The prescribed burns also will reduce the amount of fuel on the forest floor, preventing catastrophic wildfire and reducing risks to nearby communities. The Forest Service conducts prescribed burns during the growing season to mimic what occurs naturally in the forest. Public safety is the highest priority during a prescribed burn. No roads or trails will be closed during the prescribed burn, but visitors to the Croatan National Forest should be aware of smoke and fire engines in the area. The Forest Service may employ a helicopter to help conduct and manage the burn.
