The U of L Ballroom Class starts Friday, January 9th at 10:00am. Below is the syllabus and schedule for the Spring semester. Teacher is Linda Jackson. We have openings for five more people. Course Description This course is designed to teach the Intermediate level Ballroom Dancing figures in the Waltz, Hustle, Tango and Cha-Cha. In addition to learning the figures that comprise each dance, students will become familiar with the appropriate music that accompanies each dance. Students will also learn a brief history of each of the dances and become acquainted with dance terminologies. Course Objectives Goals for students enrolled in this course are to: 1. To exercise the body in a graceful and gentle manner. 2. To develop confidence and self-assurance. 3. To develop good posture. 4. To develop coordination of body and mind. 5. Be able to dance the Foxtrot, Hustle and Rumba. 6. To develop the ability to recognize the appropriate music for each dance. Course Procedures/Grading 1. Skills Assessments: (50 %) During this course, students will be required to perform each dance for the instructor to critique and grade. The grade will be determined by the student’s proficiency in the following four areas: a) Knowledge of step (25 %) All students are expected to know the figures taught in each dance. b) Footwork (25 %) Each student should know the proper footwork for each figure taught in each dance. c) Lead/follow (25 %) Students should know how to lead and follow each figure taught in each dance. d) Posture (25 %) Posture plays a vital role in ballroom dancing and students are expected to have good posture while dancing. 2. Written Test: (25 %) Students will be required to complete a written test. The written test will consist of multiple choice questions that will emphasize understanding and application of dance figures, dance histories, footwork and dance terminologies learned. 3. Active Participation: (25%) This is over 14 week period. This will be counted as 25% of your grade. This is based on your class attendance and your participation within that class.100-90 (A Grade) there for the entire class and good participation89-80 (B grade) late for class or leave early with good participation in the class 79-70 (C grade) late for class or leave early with not good participation in the class 69-60 (D Grade) does not come to class 60 or below (F Grade) 4. Dance Party Attendance for extra credit. The dance parties are held at Ballroom East Dance Studio from 8pm to 10:15pm every Friday night. No charge for anyone enrolled in the class over a fifteen week semester. If you bring a friend then they pay $5 per Friday. Attend all 15 parties add 4 points on final grade Attend 10 to 15 parties add 3 points on final grade Attend 5 to 10 parties add 2 points on final grade Attend 1 to 5 parties add I point on final grade Accommodating Disabilities Students with disabilities, who need reasonable modifications to complete assignments successfully and otherwise satisfy course criteria, are encouraged to meet with the instructor as early as possible to identify and plan specific accommodations. Students may be asked to supply a letter from the Disability Resource Center or other documentation, which will assist in planning modifications. Cellular usage is not allowed during class. Each person participating will receive extra credit.
