The US Assistant Secretary of State, South and Central Asia, Nisha - TopicsExpress

The US Assistant Secretary of State, South and Central Asia, Nisha Biswal, visited India very recently against the backdrop of ongoing dispute over Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade’s case of misrepresentation and mistreatment of an Indian maid. The reception was lukewarm, at least that is what the reports in media suggested even though Ms. Biswal is a person of Indian origin and that was her first visit to India after assuming office. Indian Foreign Secretary, Sujatha Singh, told Ms. Biswal that the US has to first come up with a suggestion to end the dispute over the diplomat. To me it appeared more like either giving statement in media in view of politically very sensitive time in India or expressing her inability to talk about serious matters with the US before the installation of new political masters in New Delhi. However, yesterday, Ms. Singh and the US Ambassador, Nancy Powell, were together in a function organized on the occasion of International Women Day and this should be considered a good sign. There is not much point on spoiling; what otherwise is a burgeoning relationship between the two countries, over the status of the diplomat. Sure, India and the US can easily work out a mutually acceptable solution to end the crisis.
