The Ukrainian parliament approved National Guard Commander Stepan Poltorak as the countrys new defence minister on Tuesday, following his nomination by President Petro Poroshenko on Monday. Poltorak, 49, replaces Valeriy Heletey. Heletey offered his resignation on Sunday after facing criticism for the failure of Kievs military operation in the south eastern regions of Ukraine. Poroshenko officially accepted the resignation on Sunday evening The United Nations says more than 3,600 people have been killed in eastern Ukraine since the fighting erupted there in April.
