The United States of America celebrates its 237th Anniversary of Independence U.S. Ambassador to Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Tonga, and Tuvalu, Frankie Reed hosted the U.S. Independence Day celebrations in Suva today to recognize the shared values of the people of the United States and the Fiji Islands. At the Lady Liberty themed event, acknowledging the most recognizable symbol of democracy in the world, Ambassador Reed highlighted that for Americans, Independence Day is a time for reflection on the evolution of their nation; from the bold Declaration of Independence in 1776 to the many contributions of men and women who fought to build and strengthen their democracy over the last 237 years. “Every year, Americans gather with friends and family on the Fourth of July to celebrate the values that inspired the founders of our nation more than two centuries ago, including life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness,” said Reed. “These freedoms are not unique to Americans. They are embodied in constitutions of many nations, and observed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights that we all recognize. So today is also a celebration of our common humanity.” In the United States, Independence Day is often celebrated in the sun—with friends and family—and over cold drinks and hot barbeque. Today, members of government, the diplomatic corps, businesses partners and other invited guests shared a small taste of this cherished American tradition. “We also take time to celebrate here in Fiji the continued strengthening and expansion of the U.S.-Fiji relationship; our support of a Fiji that represents the values and incorporates the ideas of all Fijians. As Fijians continue on this important quest to build a new future, know that the United States stands with you. Our democracy has depended on those who were willing to stand up and to voice their concerns even in the face of overwhelming odds,” added Reed. “Know that we stand with the people of Fiji, and know that our commitment to the wonderful people of Fiji has never wavered. The United States of America—as a Pacific nation, as a multicultural nation, as a country with a long and storied history with Fiji—looks forward to continue broadening our relationship with the people of Fiji on shared issues and promoting common values.”
