The Universal Colliery Disaster Forty-eight score down the shaft At eight a.m. an almighty blast The cage of the Lancaster rocket’s up To smash the gear and block it up Four hundred and thirty nine souls now lay Deep in the blackness this October day Fathers, sons, brothers, and mates Lay in wreckage no sound they make Rescuers rush from the valleys around Death and destruction all to be found Roof falls, fires and thick black smoke Hinder the progress of each brave bloke Spirits are lifted in Botanic district A man and a boy with life are gifted On and on the rescuers crawl Twelve found alive behind a roof fall Up to the surface and greeted with joy Still alive each man and boy As days go by hope is diminished Four hundred and thirty lives are finished All for the sake of reversing the fans But the cost of this was in greedy hands A hundred or more may have been saved Instead they all sleep, deep in cold graves One and eleven for each man and boy The owners left court jumping for joy A small price to pay for getting the coal But families still weep so many lost souls Copyright © Robert E Richards 18/10/2002
