The University City Timmy Trumpet Tuesday, October 8, 2013 “[Democratic] Councilwoman Maria Quinones-Sanchez, who sat on the [special City Couincil] committee, said she is worried that a requirement that all workers at demolition sites carry city-issued ID will create a ‘barrier’ for undocumented workers.” The Philadelphia Inquirer, October 4, 2013, reporting one of the stupidest quotes by a Democratic member of City Council in some time. I presume when she refers to “undocumented workers” she means “illegal aliens.” She obviously does not understand what the term “illegal” means. They should not be working on these sites in the first place. That being said, she is willing to put her extreme left-wing agenda ahead of your safety when considering a bill to improve the city’s regulation of demolition sites in the wake of the Salvation Army building collapse. Not even a tragedy of the highest degree can get these people to stop pandering to special interests. UNIVERSITY CITY FUNDRAISER FOR REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE FOR DISTRICT ATTORNEY: Thursday, October 10, from 6PM until 8PM, Matt Wolfe and Denise Furey will host a fundraiser for Danny Alvarez’s campaign. The event will take place in their home at 4256 Regent Square and the cost is $50. It should be a great event for a great candidate. Thanks to the host committee: Jay Borowsky, Linda Kerns, Adam Lang, Leonora Cravotta, Andrew Gentsch, Lou Lanni, Craig Melidosian, Megan Rath, Mark Supple, Mauricio Mendez-Vaz, Lamont Foreman and Andy Cole. IDIOCY ON CITY COUNCIL, PART I: Democratic City Councilwoman Blondell Reynolds Brown is very proud of her “Women on Corporate Boards” bill that Democratic Mayor Nutter signed into law. This requires that contractors that do business with the city disclose demographic information, such as race and gender, of those serving on their boards and their executive staff. Of course, what this really does is increase the cost of doing business with the city, raising the city’s costs and therefore your taxes. This hurts our tax base and hurts the very people that City Council is telling that they are helping. Another Philadelphia-only bill is not what we need to attract business to the city. If this is such a good idea, it should be done on a state or federal level. Sadly, this bill was passed unanimously by council. IDIOCY ON CITY COUNCIL, PART II: City Council recently passed a proposed charter amendment to extend the Philadelphia ordinance that requires that the city and businesses doing business with the city pay all of their workers at least 150 percent of the state or federal minimum wage, whichever is higher, to subcontractors. Does anyone see a pattern developing? EXACTLY WHAT ARE THEY TEACHING THESE DAYS: Temple University’s College Republican Club recently hosted a discussion on “Right to Work” issues. Joseph Schwartz, incredibly a Professor at Temple, disrupted the meeting with a profane tirade, presumably because he respects the free speech rights of everyone who agrees with him. Don’t take our word for it. Check out the Fox News account at: foxnews/opinion/2013/09/19/ultra-liberal-professor-disrupts-college-republican-meeting-with-vulgar-rant/ and the entire incident on YouTube at: youtube/watch?v=L-tM4Msrqig Temple is allegedly reviewing the incident and a spokesman said that “Temple University is a community of scholars in which freedom of inquiry, freedom of expression and mutual respect are valued.” Well, we’ll see if they mean it or if those were just hollow words and they protect the liberal professor. What would have happened if a professor has disrupted a College Democrats meeting? CALENDAR Tue 10/8 GOProud Happy Hour, 421 S. 2nd St., drink specials 5:30-7PM Tue 10/8 Spruce Hill Community Assn.
