The Upper Room Devotional – Friday, July 19 Spiritual Sowing and Growing "[Some] seeds fell on good soil and brought forth grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty." - Matthew 13:8 (NRSV) After moving to a new house, we started cleaning the land behind the house for cultivation. We removed grass, shrubs, and stones. However, within two weeks of cleaning, new grass began to appear. Cutting the grass was not enough; we needed to remove the grass by pulling out the roots to make sure it would not grow again. I removed as much of the grass as I could. The grass appeared again but this time more sparsely. After several cleanings, the land became good ground for sowing new seeds. I began thinking about this incident in a spiritual context. In order to bear fruit, my heart needs to be receptive to spiritual seed. I need to pull up the weeds of worldly passions. Addressing these issues superficially is not enough; they need to be addressed at their roots. As these desires gradually change, I am better able to receive new spiritual seeds. This transformation is a slow process that takes time. Even so, I am encouraged to see the worldliness slowly losing its hold on me and the spiritual seeds taking root. Pramila Barkataki (Uttar Pradesh, India) Thought for the Day: Spiritual transformation takes time and patience. Prayer: Dear God, prepare our hearts to receive the spiritual seed of your word. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
