The Vans US Open of Surfing just wrapped up yesterday in Huntington Beach, CA and a surprise winner fought their way up to the winners podium – the Deep Blue Surfing Event designation! The US Open is one of SoCals biggest summer parties, and we knew it wasnt going to be easy to make this annual beach bash significantly more sustainable (aka – a Deep Blue Surfing Event). But the judges numbers are already coming in, and we see some 6 & 7 scores already – plus at least one legit 10 ! Stayed tuned for our full report in a few weeks, but we can tell already there were some great wins in: waste diversion, use of renewable biofuels, alternative transportation strategy, community support for environmental nonprofits, and mitigated climate impacts! We are also giving an unqualified A for effort to all the sustainability partners that did their collective parts to do the real dirty work. First in line is the salty crew from Waste Busters, lead by Michael Siminitus (who we first worked with way back in SF for the Rip Curl Pro Search). Michael and his team set up their own hands-on materials separation station, and literally pulled out almost 2 tons of food scraps from the events waste stream. This organic material will end up as certified organic compost used to grow food, instead of simply rotting in a landfill. So congrats to all the athletes that showed up to keep the crowds entertained, and a big shout out to the folks at Vans for having the US Open follow the same path towards sustainability as the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing.
