As of 11:00 AM on November 11, Veterans of Foreign Wars sponsored VetJobs will have been serving the employment needs of transitioning military, National Guard and Reserve, veterans, wounded warriors, disabled veterans and their family members for fourteen years! During that time, millions have used the site as a resource for guidance on how to conduct a job search, interviewing, career advice, referral to other appropriate career sites, to find military related job fairs, and most of all, to successfully apply to tens of thousands of military friendly employers who want to hire them. VetJobs is now averaging over 80,000 real jobs per day! And our traffic is 700,000 visitors plus a month. VetJobs has been very successful in getting jobs for our veterans and their family members. VetJobs is proud to be sponsored and partially owned by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. VetJobs has been endorsed by more veteran service organizations (VSOs) than any other site (see vetjobs/vso.htm and vetjobs/alliances.htm). VetJobs materials are now used by state and federal DOL, DOD TAP, ACAP and VA offices as well as military and school counselors. Some of the reasons VetJobs has become a critical tool to those assisting veterans is the Employment Assistance section, The Veteran Advisor behavioral/technical career assessment test and the Upcoming Career Fairs page. VetJobs offers job information not found anywhere else on the Internet, particularly the lists of vetted job boards in the Employment Assistance section. VetJobs is regularly cited in the press, radio and TV. VetJobs has been highlighted in the VFW and American Legion magazines as well as other VSO publications, USA Today, Readers Digest, BusinessWeek, regularly quoted in the Military Times, various news services, CBS 60 Minutes, PBS Frontline, the Andy Dean radio show, Canadian Broadcast Corporation, Russian Television, and has been a regular contributor to Fox Business News. VetJobs has been appointed to the Small Business Council of the US Chamber of Commerce and was subpoenaed to testify before the Presidents Commission on the National Guard and Reserve. VetJobs has testified before Congress on many occasions and continues to work with members of Congress regarding veteran employment and economic issues. VetJobs has a very strong national reputation for being a major advocate for transitioning military, National Guard and Reserve, veterans, wounded warriors, disabled veterans and their family members. Importantly, over the last fourteen years VetJobs has come to be recognized by the industry evaluators as THE leading military related job board on the Internet. VetJobs awards include: CareerXRoads Top Site; AIRS Top Recruiting Site; WEDDLEs prestigious Users Choice Award; AOL Hot Site; Workforce Managements Top 10 Recruiting Site; was the only military job board selected by Readers Digest and BusinessWeek; and selected for the US Chamber of Commerces Small Business Veteran and Military Spouse Employment Award! Significantly, the president of VetJobs was elected to the Board of Governors of the International Association of Employment Web Sites! It has been an exciting fourteen years. But the bottom line for the staff at VetJobs and our VSO partners is millions of veterans and their family members have successfully used the site when seeking help and guidance on their job search and have found jobs. Thousands have called in and received personal job counseling. Our mission is to help our brothers, sisters and their family members and over the last fourteen years VetJobs has successfully met that mission and will continue to do so! It is you, the users of VetJobs, who have made VetJobs what it is today. Because of your service and commitment to our country, VetJobs and our VSO and alliance partners are committed to serving your needs in finding quality employment. Thank you for serving. VetJobs will continue to serve you and your family members! * * * * * * * * * * * * * * This month we celebrate the following holidays/events: 11/3 Daylight Saving times ends. Set clocks back one hour. 11/5 Election Day (varies around the country) 11/10 U.S. Marine Corps established. 11/11 Veterans Day 11/28 Thanksgiving Day 11/28 First day of Hanukkah * * * * * * * * * * * * * * On November 10 we celebrate the Marine Corps 238th birthday! The Marine Corps has been at the forefront of our countrys defense and has a great reputation as the point of the spear in every combat engagement. If you see a Marine, say Semper Fi and Happy Birthday! * * * * * * * * * * * * * * On November 11 we celebrate Veterans Day. Originally known as Armistice Day, it was created by an Act of Congress on May 13, 1938. It set the 11th of November of each year as a legal holiday to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and be known as Armistice Day, which was set in remembrance of the end of World War I. The Armistice was signed at 11:00 AM on the 11th day of the 11th month. In 1954, after World War II had required the greatest military mobilization in the history of the United States and following the Korean War, the 83rd Congress amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word Armistice and inserting the word Veteran. With the approval of this legislation (Public Law 380) on June 1, 1954, November 11th became known as Veterans Day, a day to honor American veterans of all wars. We will forever be in the debt of our veterans as they are the guarantors of our freedoms. Let us honor them accordingly. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * On November 28 we celebrate Thanksgiving Day. The tradition of the Pilgrims first Thanksgiving is steeped in myth and legend. Few people realize that the Pilgrims did not celebrate Thanksgiving, though some of their descendants later made a Forefathers Day that usually occurred on December 21 or 22. Several Presidents, including George Washington, made one-time Thanksgiving holidays. In 1827, Mrs. Sarah Josepha Hale began lobbying Presidents for the instatement of Thanksgiving as a national holiday, but her lobbying was unsuccessful until 1863 when Abraham Lincoln finally made it a national holiday with his 1863 Thanksgiving Proclamation. Now Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday of November. This was set by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1939 and was approved by Congress in 1941, who changed it from Abraham Lincolns designation as the last Thursday in November, which could occasionally end up being the fifth Thursday and hence too close to Christmas for businesses. As you celebrate Veterans Day and Thanksgiving, please remember our troops who are serving in defense of our country in Afghanistan, Iraq and many other overseas locations. For many of the troops overseas, their holidays will be celebrated at the tip of the spear as they fight for the freedoms we enjoy in these United States. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * On the economic front there are continuing signs the economy is slowing again. Factories barely boosted their output in September, adding to the signs that the economy was slowing even before the government shutdown. The Federal Reserve reported that manufacturing production rose only 0.1%, down from 0.5% in August. Overall industrial production increased 0.6%, mostly due to a 4.4% jump in utility output. September was unseasonably warm which lead to increased air conditioning use. As reported in the VetJobs Veteran Employment Situation Report (https://vetjobs/media/category/eagle-publications/veteran-employment-situation-report/) September only created 148,000 new jobs. Over the prior 12 months, job gains averaged only 185,000 per month. Most economists point out that the economy needs to create 250,000 new jobs per month to stand still and absorb new workers, and over 250,000 new jobs to have any real economic growth. Over the last four years, the country has not been generating the jobs needed for growth which is why we have 23,000,000 unemployed people. In fact, the country is still down six million jobs from before the last recession. While some politicians keep saying politically that the country is recovering, the facts do not bear that out. Normal unemployment (normal for people changing jobs and shifts in the economy) is 4.0%. The United States just came of the longest period of 8.0% unemployment in our countrys history. With a current une mployment rate of 7.2%, we are NOT out of the recession. There are way too many people still out of work. On the plus side, the fact that veterans as a class have an overall unemployment rate that is lower than the national unemployment rate continues to indicate that veterans are having better success finding employment than non-veterans. The bottom line from the above data is the economy is very anemic. It is the worst recovery after any recession since the Great depression. Employers are still reluctant to start major hiring. Companies are waiting for the rest of the fall out and constant surprises from the Affordable Care Act which is putting many people out of work. Lets look at the economic indicators for last month. On the plus side: -The Institute for Supply Management-Chicagos gauge of manufacturing activity surged in October to 65.9 from 55.7 in September, while economists expected activity to fall to 55. The reading was the highest since March 2011. Readings above 50 indicate expansion, while those below point to contraction in activity. -The Federal Reserve said it will continue buying financial assets at a pace of $85 billion a month as it awaits more evidence of economic progress. The central bank also reaffirmed its vow to keep interest rates at historic lows until the unemployment rate falls to 6.5%. -The Labor Department reports consumer prices rose 0.2% in September from the month prior, matching expectations. Excluding the food and energy sectors, inflation rose 0.1% , slightly lower than the 0.2% expected. On the negative side: -Private-sector employment gains slowed down in October, as employers added 130,000 jobs according to Automatic Data Processing Inc. Analysts polled by MarketWatch had expected an October gain of 150,000, compared with an originally estimated increase of 166,000 in September. -The Conference Board reports consumer confidence fell in October to 71.2 from an upwardly revised 80.2 the month prior. Economists expected the gauge to fall to 75 from an initially reported 79.7. -The Federal Reserve reported that manufacturing production rose only 0.1%, down from 0.5% in August. -The National Association of Realtors reports signed contracts to buy previously-owned homes fell 5.6% in September from the month prior the biggest drop since May of 2010 widely missing expectations contracts would rise 0.1%. -A final reading on consumer sentiment in October from Thomson Reuters and the University of Michigan came in at 73.2, from 75.2 earlier in the month. Economists expected the reading to come in at 75. -The Commerce Department reports orders for long-lasting goods rose 3.7% in September, beating expectations of a 2% jump. However, excluding the transportation segment, orders fell 0.1%. -The National Association of Realtors reports U.S. existing home sales fell 1.9% in September to an annualized rate of 5.29 million units, missing economists expectations sales would fall to an annualized rate of 5.3 million units. -The Philadelphia Federal Reserves gauge of manufacturing activity in the U.S. mid-Atlantic region fell to 19.8 in October from 22.3 the month prior, topping expectations of a steeper fall to 15. The reading indicates the factory sector expanded at a slower pace in October than it did in September. -The Federal Reserve said in its anecdotal Beige Book report the U.S. economy grew at a modest to moderate pace in September and the beginning of October across its 12 districts. However, a battle in Congress over raising the debt ceiling, coupled with the partial government shutdown, caused an increase in uncertainty. -The New York Federal Reserves manufacturing index fell in October to 1.52, widely missing estimates the gauge would rise to 7 from 6.29 in September. The reading is the lowest since May. As one can see, there are more negative indicators than positive indicators. This has been the case for the last year. So where does that leave the United States? It helps to look at history. Most people forget that after World War One, the four military and economic powers in the world were the United States, Great Britain, France and Argentina. Yes, Argentina! However, Juan Peron came to power and turned Argentina into one of the first large countries socialist in the 1940s. Today, Argentina is neither an economic or military power and is still trying to get out of debt. Juan Peron took control of the banking system by nationalizing the banks, took control of major manufacturers and put the medical system under the control of the state. There are a lot of parallels between what Juan Peron did to Argentina and what is happening in the United States today. Will the United States be the next Argentina? Only time will tell. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Finally, as you travel for the holidays this month, be sure to stop in at the local USO offices on a base or at the airport and sign the register. USO funding depends on those signatures. While you are at it, take some packaged cookies, candy, etc. for the USO. It will be greatly appreciated! Additionally, if you are a member of the National Guard or Reserve, please read article #3 below. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * As always, if there is anything we at VetJobs can do for you, please do not hesitate to call or email. VetJobs Recommends: The A+ Solution >From time to time the staff at VetJobs recommends a book or movie of importance to veterans. This month we look at The A+ Solution, by John Bell and Christine Smith. The book highlights how too many of Americas working men and women lack the skills and knowledge to compete in a global economy. This crisis undermines their access to the American Dream and our national position in the global marketplace. The A+ Solution provides a detailed but always engaging examination of the skills deficit problem, the shortcomings in the current legislative and programmatic response, and the proven education and training resources of Americas professional societies and trade associations. The book concludes with a simple but powerful plan for tapping those resources to re-skill American workers and reinforces the nations global economic leadership. Available through WEDDLEs, weddles. 5. Military Reductions Military reports the Department of Defense plans to accelerate its force drawdown next year, which could result in more involuntary separations for troops and civilian workers. The report comes from the DOD comptroller Robert Hale. Hale said the cut backs will not be big, across-the-board [separations]. They will be focused. 6. Army National Guard Set to Shrink The Army National Guard will decrease in size from 358,200 troops to 350,200 by the end of fiscal 2015, according to Lt. Gen. William Ingram, director of the Army Guard. The Armys getting smaller. The Guard, the [active- and reserve-component] mix, and the number of soldiers that would remain in the National Guard is a concern, he said. 7. Construction Hiring Demand Builds Again WantedAnalytics reports the most recent BLS jobs report showed the construction sector added 20,000 jobs during September. This was the third highest job gain seen last month, with only professional and business services and transportation and warehousing seeing larger increases. News of job gains is good for the construction sector, where employment was relatively unchanged for the past 6 months. In September, there were more than 262,000 construction jobs available in the US, a 31% year-over-year increase compared to September of 2012. Due to the seasonality of many construction projects, hiring usually slows in the last quarter of the year and through the early months when weather is cold. The highest demand is currently in Houston, TX, followed by New York, Los Angeles, Dallas, and Washington, DC. 8. Three More Veterans Die After Improper VA Medical Treatment Mark Flatten of the Washington Examiner reports that improper care in the emergency room led to three patient deaths at the Department of Veterans Affairs hospital in Memphis last year, part of a growing pattern of preventable deaths at agency hospitals nationwide. The latest report from the VAs Inspector General found one of the patients was given medication despite a documented allergy to the drug, and had a fatal reaction. Another died after being administered multiple medications without proper monitoring, and the third died after delays in getting proper treatment for very high blood pressure, the IG said. The deaths occurred between April and September 2012. Recent IG reports have linked patient deaths and infections at other veterans facilities to improper care, unsafe sanitary practices and poor maintenance. Those include five deaths from Legionnaires disease at the VA medical facility in Pittsburgh, four deaths by suicide or drug overdose in Atlanta and six deaths resulting from delayed colon cancer screenings in Columbia, SC. 9. Federal Government Hiring of Veterans Improves In FY 2012, the Executive Branch of Government hired the highest percentage of veterans in over 20 years, surpassing the previous high set in FY 2011. The Government hired approximately 195,000 new employees in FY 2012 as compared to approximately 230,000 new employees in FY 2011-a reduction of over 34,000 total hires. Of those 195,000 FY 2012 hires, approximately 56,000 were veterans, equaling 28.9% of total hires. This is a 4.9% increase over the FY 2009 baseline of 24.0% and approximately 0.6% higher than the 28.3% realized in FY 2011. In FY 2012, the number of veterans on board was approximately 612,000 of the 2,058,000 total employees and veterans represented 29.7% of the workforce. In FY 2009, approximately 512,000 out of the 1,983,000 employees, or 25.8% of the workforce, were veterans; this is approximately a 4% increase in 3 years. 10. National Guard (in Federal Status) and Reserve Activated as of October 30, 2013 The total number currently on active duty from the Army National Guard and Army Reserve is 33,487; Navy Reserve, 4,479; Marine Corps Reserve, 2,052; Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve, 7,576; and the Coast Guard Reserve, 376. This brings the total National Guard and reserve personnel who have been activated to 47,970, including both units and individual augmentees. 11.
