The Visayas are an ethnic group in the Philippines who live across islands within the Visayan Sea. Their script has been derived from ancient Brahmi (ब्राह्मी लिपि), which was used in India to write Sanskrit before the 10th century AD. Scholars believe that their name Visaya has been derived from the name of the Indonesian Sri Vijaya (श्री विजय) Empire. However, to me it sees that it must have been derived from the Sanskrit word Vishaya (विषय) which means subject, i.e. the people or realm of a country ( = प्रजा). Pics. 1.
