The Way Home Rescue Alliance, a 501c3 non-profit animal rescue organization based out of Central KY, is seeking a volunteer Rescue Coordinator. This is not a paid position. The Rescue Coordinator is responsible for networking and arranging transport for the animals in the Estill County Animal Shelter in Ravenna, KY, a high intake shelter in Eastern rural KY. The requirements of this volunteer position are best accomplished by an individual that is not employed by a full time job. Depending on amount of intake at the shelter, this volunteer position requires anywhere from 25-35 hours per week on average. Some weeks may require more, some weeks may require less. A love of animals, dedication, a drive to succeed, flexibility, and ability to handle fast-paced, high stress scenarios are a must. Job Description •Pull photos of new intake in the shelter off of Facebook. •Post shelter animals on TWHRA’s Facebook page and compose email blast to send to rescue contacts. Updated email blasts are sent 2-3 times per day. •Respond to inquiries from rescues on animals in the shelter – Communicate with shelter staff to get additional information on an animal per interested rescue’s request (i.e. weight, temperament test, etc). •If the rescue inquiry is from a rescue that is not on our ‘approved rescue list’, meaning we have not worked with them before, then the rescue coordinator will be responsible for emailing them the “Rescue Screening Form” for completion, and once the form is returned, check all references before an animal is confirmed or pulled from the shelter for the rescue. •Confirm with rescues when they are willing to pull an animal from the shelter. In confirming rescue, the following MUST be determined: -If we can transport the animal directly from the shelter to the receiving rescue. -If direct transport cannot be arranged from the shelter, if the receiving rescue can/will pay for the animal to be moved to the local vet clinic to get vetting/boarding until a transport can be arranged. MUST check with vet clinic to ensure they have space to accommodate the animal if vetting/boarding is required by receiving rescue. If so, clinic information should be provided to receiving rescue by rescue coordinator for receiving rescue to call the vet clinic to provide credit card payment and direction on what vetting they want their animal to have. Also, clinic needs an approximate time frame as to how long the animal will be at the clinic before transport. •Notify the shelter when rescue is confirmed for an animal, and when a TWHRA volunteer will be coming to the shelter to pick up the animal on receiving rescues behalf. Make note of any animals on stray hold, as they cannot be transported from the shelter until their ‘release date’. If you are notified by the shelter that the animal you have secured rescue for has been adopted or reclaimed by owner, notify the rescue that offered to take the animal and see if they may be willing to help another animal instead. •Communicate with TWHRA transport volunteers to get animals moved from the shelter directly to their rescue, the vet’s office, temporary foster home, etc. in a timely manner to prevent the shelter and vet clinic (where animals are boarded) from becoming overcrowded. •For animals going on long distance transport in which the receiving rescue has a transport coordinator making arrangements, follow-up and communicate with that transport coordinator to stay up to date on when the animal will be leaving the vet clinic/temp foster care, or if a TWHRA transport volunteer will need to get the animal to the starting location of its long distance transport, and if so, secure a driver to do so. Ensure that all paperwork for transport is prepared for the animal to leave the vet clinic, and notify the vet clinic of date of transport for the animal. •At end of week, email TWHRA’s Sponsorship Coordinator with the listing of animals that secured rescue through the week and the contact information of the receiving rescue. Skills •Must be extremely skilled at multi-tasking. •Excellent planning and time management, including managerial skills and high attention to detail. •Ability to coordinator varied detailed logistics and schedules under emergencies and extreme time constraints. •Must be self motivated and take initiative. •Ability to quickly make decisions in emergencies as needed. •Ability to communicate clearly, professionally, and in a timely manner with fellow TWHRA volunteers, vet clinic, receiving rescues, and shelter staff. •Ability to determine logistics of transport – collect driver information, determine dates/times of transport, make sure TWHRA transport volunteer has space for all animals, ability to realize when multiple rescues are located in the same vicinity and try to make arrangements to move all dogs to multiple rescues on same date and same location to be more efficient, etc. (Sample materials are available to show you how to get started.) •Must be well versed in Gmail and Facebook. •Previous experience and familiarity with animal rescue operation and transport coordination preferred, but not required. •Able to develop and maintain relationships with receiving rescue organizations, transport coordinators, etc. Interested volunteer applicants should email Sarah with TWHRA at sarahthewayhome@gmail . In your email communication, please include a summary of your experience in animal rescue or an animal related field and tell us a little bit about yourself and your current schedule. Thank you!
