The Woods World Cup Countdown 21st : Greece Greece are not overly appreciated in World Football outside their home country. They typically play ultra-defensive football which is not attractive to watch. Despite stunning the world with their 2004 European Championships win, the Greeks have a very poor World Cup record, qualifying for only two finals prior to Brazil and exiting at the group stage both times. I dont see anything to suggest that this cycle will be broken as Colombia and Ivory Coast should prove too good for them and Japan to cause them real problems. Expect low scoring affairs when the Greeks take to the field. Despite a fairly comfortable playoff win over Romania, Greece never looked convincing in qualification and I expect their mediocre form to continue in Brazil. Player to watch: Giorgos Karagounis. Part of Greeces problem is they simply dont have a stand out player. Talismanic Karagounis is now 37 and is nowhere near the player he was in his prime. Surrounded by average international players, he simply wont have the stamina or ability to make an impact at the top level. All that said, he is still the most talented player Greece currently boasts.
