The World Cup is fantastic. The Kings won the Stanley Cup. Wimbledon is worth a look. Formula One and TUDOR/United Sports Car are brilliant. Summer seems to be completely full up with…. OH WAIT. What about baseball? I just read that the Dodgers are now tied for first place in the NL West. I read it. I didn’t see it. Because here it is the end of June and the Dodgers and TWC still haven’t figured out how to let fans actually watch the games on television. When I see highlights on ESPN, I still don’t recognize all the guys on the team. I have no idea who’s injured, who’s popping, who’s slumping — much less what the mid-season trades might look like. And no, this hasn’t just made me turn my attention to other teams. After all, I could be watching Oakland or Detroit or even the Angels, but I’m so discouraged and pummeled by the Dodgers that I’ve really just started to lose interest in the season altogether. Thankfully, there is one thing that can make me grateful for any baseball at all: the relentless coverage that ESPN gives to the NBA and NFL on a daily basis. I love basketball and football, but if you watch ESPN you’d think there are only two things happening in the world: a bunch of soccer matches somewhere hot and maybe, maybe, maybe Lebron James might leave Miami (of course he won’t). It’s staggering. It’s also the clearest indicator that the true function of ESPN and televised sports is to serve as R&D for the Sports Book industry in Vegas and offshore. Where was I? Oh right. Not watching the Dodgers.
