The Yorkshire Dales farms are set in history with the dry stone walls and stone houses. The stone houses are long and narrow due to the construction technique of the time and the fact that the barn which housed the animals in winter were built interconnecting with the living quarters of the farmers. Most of these long houses, like the one we are staying in, have been converted now into single homes or apartments (ours is in two apartments). The freestanding barns are still used for hay storage and housing the animals in winter
