The ability of the N.S.A. to eavesdrop -- its breadth, its scope -- is breathtaking. So when I hear people object to things like a so-called national gun registry, these objections are a moot point. If the U.S. is able to eavesdrop on a rag tag group of militants in Afghanistan, the government is certainly tracking the sales of arms in its own country. I wonder what type of limits future governments will impose on this type of spying, if any.
