The air smelt of burnt coffee & mildew from the boarders downstairs. There was something sad in how small the kitchen was, but the wideness of the windows played a redeeming factor. Outside, the faint whisper of spring in its infancy alerted the children at play, who were eager to shed their winter skins & frolic in longer daylight. Inside, she huddled into herself dreading the change of season when the sun would once again drip in through the glass, as if to say, “Come.”
