The airport hotel is not the swankiest on the block. Many of the staff seem to be missing teeth but their smiles warm the cold evening. Ross and Emma keep me company in the lounge, where the multi-ringed bartender cautions Ross not to eat the menu. She serves up Emma a BLT in seconds. They note the lingering smell of smoke in my non-smoking room, but it!s clean and there are no chicken bones under the bed. at 5 am the shuttle is packed. Hows everyone this morning? chirrups the driver. Going anywhere exciting? Silence. In the pitch dark, I keep my excitement with my passport in its special pouch, around my neck, hidden, safe.
