The amusement ride that flung a girl to her death in Adelaide was also earmarked for the Royal Melbourne Show. Ride safety has attracted fiercer scrutiny this year after Adelene Leong, 8, was thrown like a doll from a ride at the Royal Adelaide Show last Friday. Since the death some people who had previously ridden on the Airmaxx 360 have come forward saying they had noticed that people had not been properly clipped in. The machine, now at the centre of a South Australian police investigation, had been earmarked for the Royal Melbourne Show. But the operator knocked back the space offered at the showgrounds some months ago, according to show management. Show organisers are now assuring the public that all amusement rides will undergo rigorous safety checks. Before the show officially opens on Saturday, each ride will face two separate inspections by electricians and specialist structural engineers who check restraints and the machinery stability. Operators will also be required to submit a maintenance log by 8am each day,or risk being shut down.
