The appendix, some organ with unknown function, which has the same meaning of the book organ that has the function of concentrating knowledge and location for easy reference, also a word similar to an extension. The thought of this creates great possibilities for the science fiction writer. Is it some gutteral database of knowledge? Has it functioned in the past? Was it deactivated by chance or on purpose? Can it be reactivated? Who would benefit from a planet of people with deactivated appendix? Is there anyone that has a functioning appendix? The appendix may sound boring from a readers standpoint, maybe they would refer to it as something else, something hip and current, like an I-Bank. I remember hearing that it used to function when we had a different diet. Surely things would be better if we all had a section we could refer to internally which would point us to basically anything we wanted to know. The implications for self healing and perhaps genetic memory? It would operate probably without internal dialogue as the body precedes language? A non-conscious databank for our autonomous cells and organs? Hmm, what scientific research has been published? I could mix this with the Venusian Empire storyline. Do Venusian books have an appendix, or do the Venusians even need books if their bodily appendix never stopped functioning? Yet we still have instincts and gut sensations... go with your gut feeling.
