The argument that there is nothing that we as a society can do to prevent these types of incidents is false. Statistics show that background checks and sane gun control policies do reduce the number of domestic shooting incidents, and by large enough margins to warrant action on this front. That’s why more than 90 percent of voters support mandatory background checks for gun owners. And yet a small faction of fanatical gun nuts have managed to block this legislation time and time again. The argument that more guns means less killing is another lie that is easily destroyed with simple facts. For instance, if there is a gun in the home, a family squabble is three times more likely to end with someone being murdered.
