The arrogance of Subir Bhaumik of RAW, writing in the 24th March - TopicsExpress

The arrogance of Subir Bhaumik of RAW, writing in the 24th March issue of Economic Times, is downright outrageous. Bangladesh is an independent and svereign country and a signatory to NPT, despite being wedged territorially by a nuclear power. It is in the interest of our defense strategy, and our national option, to seek the protective umbrella of a counter balancing nuclear power for guaranteeing the integrity of our territorial sovereignty. A chicken can feel secure on the goodwill of a neighbouring fox only at its own peril. Whether Bangladesh seeks the nuclear umbrella of Britain, France, USA or China - is strictly the determination of the sovereign will of the people of Bangladesh. Mr.Bhaumiks view that it is against Indian interests to allow the US to establish a naval base in Bangladesh is most provocative. One can only hope that this does not represent the view of the democratic Federation of India. The Bhaumiks of India need to realise, that the prejudice of the Delhi elite against the North East Indians, the Tamils of South India and also the Sikhs of Punjab, is making the future of the Indian Federation very fragile. Centrifugal forces are rife in many parts of India. The continuous bifurcation of States within the Indian Federation and massive military deployments to contain internal strife is reflective of this syndrome. In this backdrop of a fragile Federation, Mr.Bhaumik holding forth that Indian interests transcends the territorial sovereignty of Bangladesh is a provocation that is definitely not acceptable. Indeed, it is insulting and presumptive of Mr.Bhaumik to conclude that Indian interests are shared by Sh.Hasina, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh. Albeit, Sh.Hasinas less than legitimate claim to office, her Rump Parliament has not yet passed any legislation declaring Bangladeshs annexation with the Indian Federation. Mr.Bhaumik has been very unkind to Sh.Hasina, by portraying her as a stooge of the Indian government and damaged her patriotic cedentials as a Bsngladeshi. Indeed, by his strident arrogance, the Bhaumik article has damaged vestiges of goodwill that India may claim from the people of Bangladesh. We pray that the Government Indian reins in its Bhaumiks for the sake of good bilateral relations between Bangladesh and India.
