The attached video documents the history and evolution of a significant portion of higher education in the Rio Grande Valley. It begins with a 1991 ceremonial bill signing by Governor Ann Richards at the creation of The University of Texas at Brownsville. It ends with the current transition from UTB, UT Pan Am, and the RAHC to The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley with multiple academic campuses and a four-year regional medical school and residency programs located from one end of the Valley to the other. This entire 23-year trajectory has occurred under the remarkable leadership of President Juliet V. Garcia who will leave her position at UTB at the end of this month to assume responsibility as the founding executive director of the UT Systems new Institute of the Americas. We owe Juliet a huge debt of gratitude for her vision, dedication and persistence. We also thank countless other men and women at UT System, UTB, UTPA, UTHSCSA, and in Valley communities, many of whom are shown in the attached video, for their devotion to this vision and to higher education in our region.
