The baby names conversation had begun years before Sara Originales and I had even said I do. She had her favorites, I had mine, but after going through a long list of names that we liked we hadnt agreed on what to name our son. George Jr. was not an option... well were Hispanic and as my fellow hispanos know theres at least 100 juniors in every Hispanic family. No, we wanted something original. We even went as far as making names up, at least I did. (There was one name I created that we both liked so I wrote in my little notebook that I kept in my pocket ... which I left in the pocket and through into the washer later. Paper doesnt do so well in water.) It was over dinner when we finally settle the fate of our sons identity. ( I may be mistaken but I think we were at Chilis) There was a tune on my mind at the time, With God by Salvador. I hummed the melody in my head until I came to one of the few lines of the song that I actually know (ya, Im that guy), ... Paul and Silas kept on singing.... I thought, thats a nice name. Hey Babe, what do you think about the name Silas, I asked. I like it. She answered. It was settled we would name our son Silas. Its a strong name, the name of a man who would not allow his circumstances to shake his faith. One of my favorite accounts in the Bible. (Acts 16) It was ORIGINAL! No one we knew had the name, in our family nor any of our friends. So we kept the decision to ourselves for a while lest some name snatching couples steal our sons first name. After the many conversations, and list of names upon names upon names, we could put our mind at ease. Now over a year later we find out that our sons name is among the top chosen this past year and not because people have really been digging into their Bibles, no... all because of the popularity of a heretical movie and a show about marijuana. Well, our son will be told (and is told) that he is named after the real man named Silas who stood for his faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Next time, Ill make sure to take my notebook out of my pants.
