The baseball analogy in this article is almost right. What they call the US model, which is really one of two--the one theyre referring to is the GFS, the other is the NAM--is a strategic player. Its strong suit is winter weather systems, inside 24 hours. This is why The Weather Channel relied on it more heavily than NWS did, resulting int TWCs more accurate forecasts. The NYTimes is right about the European model they referred to, the ECMWF, being consistently the most reliable, but left out the concurrence among the NAM, the ECMWF and Britains UK-MET. The NWS likes concurrence in their forecasting, and the GFS was the outlier.
