The wonderful, insightful young man is seeing some things at a level very few ever do. My lessons have been a little different over the years, and I think he would someday agree. Relationship isnt about the me. Hes got that part. But it is also not about the s/he. It is neither me nor she to whom I devote myself, but to the we. That is something different from me or she. At times, and it seems women find this more than men, when a me devotes to he, it can inadvertently feed the selfishness of the he. If he has not equally learned the lesson to devote to the she... Why I think this is important is that every relationship has a we. When youre married, we is the husband and wife. When you have children, the we is the husband, wife and child(ren). Often when there are children,it is common that it is the she who forgets the we, and focuses on the wee (babe). The we there means she must still be a wife, not merely a mother. The deeply important part that mother after mother forgets, is that she must take care of the she - herself - or she will have nothing left for the he or the wee. Im playing with words a bit here, but I do truly hope that the message is received and understood, for in the we is where relationships are built and grow.
