The big girl in the photo is Momma Fleurri. Momma Fleurri came to us after a life as a breeding sow at a museum farm up North. She was to be sent to slaughter when her piglet bearing years were over. But instead she came to TN to live out her life. Since her piglets had been taken from her in her previous life, Momma Fleurri adopted every young farm pig who arrived here during her stay with us. She raised about 10 of our young farm pigs and piglets and I thought it was so special that, at the end of her life, she finally got to be a real momma pig and raise some youngsters....even if they were adopted. The baby pigs adored her and she was a wonderfully patient mom with them. When we finally had to put Momma Fleurri down because of a rapidly growing uterine tumor, I could not remove her body from the barn until the next morning because of the young pigs laying on her body crying. It was one of the saddest sights I have ever seen. But Momma Fleurri died happy...surrounded by pigs she had finally gotten to raise.
