The city has hired a couple of engineering firms to help it examine potential environmental, permitting and marine impediments with the eight concepts vying to renovate the current inverted pyramid pier or build a new one. Any concept would have to be able to comply with the requirements of the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, Southwest Florida Water Management District and Pinellas County. Kelli Levy, a manager in Pinellas Countys natural resources division, said regulations put into place after the Pier was built forbid vertical walls and a roof. Anything built prior to those regulations, we consider those when a structure is being replaced, she said. They can be configured differently, but they cannot exceed the current dimensions of vertical wall and roof.
