The city of Amarillo commission just voted to pass the downtown building costing over 60 million dollars without your vote. So I think posting that Amarillo is for sale wouldnt be a stretch. Youve been sold out unless you vote them out in May of 15. Sorry they deleted the post. Heres the conversation though. Michael Shelton Save Amarillo is right you know..... Chance Lancaster Its a mini obama government Adam Shultz Amarillo is for sale not sell. Save Amarillo Auto correct is so much fun but not as much as those who correct grammar beyond the point of the post Angela Arlene Reel i am confused.... Angela Arlene Reel what are they doing? why? and where do i vote? Adam Shultz Hard to take political post seriously when proper grammar isnt used. Save Amarillo Adam you do realize you butchered that sentence, right? Angela Arlene Reel chicago had to file bankrupt i dont want my city to have to do that Adam Shultz Im just sticking to the theme of the thread. Save Amarillo Sounds good. Michael Shelton Theyre building a baseball stadium that nobody wants for a team that nobody watches. They also gave Coke a bunch of money and tax breaks for the next 10 years to move their bottling plant so they can put it right there. They also want to build a brand new hotel instead of letting the people that want to refurbish the Herring go along with their plans. The Herring would cost $38 million to restore and all the money is already there from private investors. Angela Arlene Reel wow amarillo is rediculous. hummm sounds shady to me. what do we as the community need to do in order to stop this? Michael Shelton And..... They decided to do all this without letting the people vote for or against. Paul Harpole actually had the nerve to say that when Amarillo re-elected him that was the city telling him they are in favor of this. Save Amarillo Weve spent over 10 million on downtown mainly to the planners. Now the planners have changed, so where did that money go? Amarillo lost 16 million moving the multi billion dollar company cola cola from downtown. Wouldnt it make more sense to have a multi billion dollar company downtown? Michael Shelton The way you stop it Angelena is to stop voting these people into office that do whatever the city elite want them to do. Angela Arlene Reel true... so what can we do now? and instead of building a bunch of crud we dont need why dont they help the community. help our veterans get of the streets and out of homeless shelters! this city is sad. Angela Arlene Reel right, I honestly wont lie I didnt vote. But can we do a petition or anything? Michael Shelton Sorry I misspelled your name. My iPhone screen is cracked. Regina Ledwig Actually, a lot of people are in favor of it. I can understand people being for/against the baseball stadium. But a lot of the money going towards renovating and adding on to the civic center, as well as building a new hotel brings in a lot of revenue for Amarillo. We will get concerts that Lubbock gets (George Straight, Paul MCCartney, etc), more conventions will come, more athletic tournaments...once this happens more people will start going to baseball games, more businesses will come. Do some research before completely shutting it down. Save Amarillo Well. We need at least 3 people who can agree to stop it and work with new commissioners to run in may of 15. I think I have 1 or 2 but its illegal for them to campaign this early officially Pam Garten-Farmer why do you think that mitchell built that nice pretty toot totem down town right by where the field will be.. Save Amarillo Regina, a new hotel wont bring George Strait. Not to mention they arent touching the civic center. So I wish youd quit supporting it if youre basing it on that misinformation Michael Shelton If people are in favor then let them vote on it. And yes, the civic center needs to be renovated or replaced before anything. Also, why not let the private investors that want to refurbish the Herring go ahead and do it? It wouldnt cost the people a single dime and its a major historical building that would itself bring in tourist. Save Amarillo Pam, and they ( these same city commissioners) voted to give home 400k to do it...of your tax dollars Pam Garten-Farmer what you also dont understand what it will do to the people that live here, it wont effect you people in the south part of town, but my taxes will be more than my house !!! and they want to clean up the area to make it look good, well that is fine, but my house is paid for, they will not give me what my house is worth to move it out or tear it down, and they dont have to, they can come take my house, for you people in the south part of town would you want the city taking your house?? Letty Shelton I have not heard of one person in support of this except for those with vested interest. Michael Shelton West Texan should get in on this thread. Regina Ledwig Actually they are: m.amarillo/.../updated-civic-center-will... Updated Civic Center: Will public pay the price? | Amarillo Mobile Some experts think Amarillo Civic Center is like an... m.amarillo Pam Garten-Farmer it was all planned has been planned and we have no say... it is that simple, vote these people out Save Amarillo Im a fan of saving the herring but not in the manner the owner wants us to foot the bill. We cant be against our taxes here but OK for profit and taxes there just because we like the idea. At least thats my opinion Letty Shelton Oh he is not wanting us to foot the bill. Michael Shelton Theres private investors for the Herring. We toured it a few months ago and the curator told us all about it. $38 to fix it and the money is already there. They (the Amarillo elite) dont want completion to their new hotel. Save Amarillo Regina you do understand they will only do that for the civic center in part 5. They are hoping youre OK with their 115 million in ideas so you can get the 40 million everyone agrees with. Michael Shelton *$38 million Letty Shelton All the Herring is asking for is the tax breaks everyone else is getting during the downtown renovation. Michael Shelton The city council keeps putting the Herring issue on the bottom of the pile. They think they can wait the 84 year old owner out. Regina Ledwig I actually do understand. I can read. Im just one of the few who likes to take advantage of what our city has and can offer. I go support our hockey team and baseball team. I want to see our city grow and Im giving this a chance. Save Amarillo Rephrase. City debt funded growth isnt growth. It is how most business grows. Michael Shelton That stadium will be a ghost town within 10 years. Kris Tubbs Political tricks depend on people who dont read the fine print... Kirk Chudej The increase in tax revenue downtown will cover the cost in the long run Save Amarillo. Also look how well this worked in lubbock and how much new business it brought to the city, new jobs, more tax revenue. Its a good thing dont be so close minded. Save Amarillo Im sure the city will get the UK to hold soccer matches there. Soccer!!!! Letty Shelton The coke building housed the first business in Amarillo. It is still in pretty good shape. So why tear it down for a much smaller baseball stadium that? Save Amarillo Kirk. Downtown Lubbock is a joke. I think you mean the major college who found investors to build the event center. The city did tax freeze it but didnt fund it. Is this really how Amarillo is getting support for this, using false information and hopes of voters. I use factual failures like the AGN center and others.... yet theres still hope hope I guess Chris Huddleston The question is, how much PORK was attached to that document! Letty Shelton Lubbock did not tear down many of their historic buildings, neither did OKC or Albuquerque, they repurposed them. Save Amarillo Kirk Chudej, not to mention Lubbock has surpassed a BILLION in debt, with the expectation for property taxes to increase 30 percent in the next decade to survive as a city. I guess youre ok with Amarillo going down that road? Save Amarillo Chris Huddleston, its not the pork per se, its more the concern with historical what-ifs... they are planning on no failures on the part of the lease holders on ALL the debt. They are debt servicing half of the project. Meaning, we hold the debt if a private business doesnt hold up their end. Its not meant to be easy to follow, thats why they built the entire plan on wow, look at all the happy faces and pretty places downtown and hope people dont care the city may be broke before it happens.
