“The civil officer does not love money and the military officer does not fear death”, this message was found in General Yue Fei’s Mausoleum in Zhejiang, Hangzhou which I recently visited. Something struck my mind and I hereby attach it for your reading: General Yue’s wisdom is almost 900 years old and it makes me think of our country’s civil and military officers. Our civil servants love money and they need to be paid millions. Some even have time to go to France to take some exotic cooking lessons. And our police officers cannot even handle a riot. Basically the fall of many dynasties was largely due to complacency, corruption, nepotism, greed and incompetence? Look at the arrogant and million dollar faces of our ministers. You can sense they are not interested in serving any more. They are more interested to suck up to the emperor and keep their jobs. Do our leaders read history to understand the problems and failures of the many dynasties before them? And yet, why are they still doing the same? If they see Yue Fei, won’t they feel ashamed? And one has the cheek to say he is a better patriot than Sylvia Lim. I almost puked!
