The claim that zoo elephants are ambassadors to teach kids to - TopicsExpress

The claim that zoo elephants are ambassadors to teach kids to protect their wild counterparts is absolutely far-fetched. To "teach" children by putting them on elephant backs and watch them perform, is to teach them to be indifferent to their needs and interfere with them for personal pleasure, which is exactly the problem that we have with wild elephants. The amount of money that is wasted on caring for animals in captivity (vet bills, feed costs, enclosure maintenance) could be making a huge difference in protecting animals in the wild without any of those costs, just anti-poaching and habitat preservation initiatives. Caging animals to protect them from danger is not the answer. For those of you who have family who still attend the zoo, ask them to stop attending for a few years, put all the money that they would have used on zoo passes in a jar, and donate it to a charity that, for example, pays for rangers to protect elephants from poachers in Africa. I bet you it will go a whole lot farther in saving the species than it would have to feed an elephant in a cage!
