The claregalway.info project began as part of an effort to engage new residents of Claregalway with the community and history surrounding them. It came about following a series of conversations with locals (of various ages and residencies), each of whom expressed concern that there was no cohesive, easily accessible method of finding out about ongoing local activities. Though there are various methods familiar to long-term residents—notably word of mouth—newer residents may not have the luxury of popping in to a neighbour to find out about the latest GAA results, or which local pub does the best Guinness. For example, I know I’d call Asumpta for the results of the local Ladies GAA, Clement for updates on the School, and Dermot for some information on the next Drama Club rehearsal. But newer residents, who have yet to familiarise themselves with their community, might be more inclined to stay at home, simply because they don’t know such local amenities exist. Alternatively, they might travel to Galway City or a neighbouring parish, even though there are a host of activities to avail of much closer to home. With this in mind, a resource to engage and inform these new residents was planned. Through conversing with residents, it became apparent that community spirit was strong, but disconnected. The aim of this project is to connect locals, and their respective mini-communities, in a more significant way than by address. There are a wide range of local activities, fairs and festivals which take place every other day in the village. Many residents however, are uninformed due to a strong reliance on word of mouth as a vehicle for publicity. claregalway.info was born of a desire to publicise these specifically local conversations for every member of the community to engage with. With respect to older generations who do not own computers, a public space will be made available in the forthcoming Claregalway Museum to learn and share local information, using the website as an interactive platform for them to contribute.
