The coastal regions of the world have their climate moderated by the oceans. Water has a high specific heat. Its ability to store energy means that temperatures change slowly across the seasons. The interior of continents, on the other hand, experience wild swings in temperature over the year, especially during Spring and Fall. When we left on our western trip on May 19, spring had barely arrived. There were no leaves on the trees, the last snow had melted and the ice gone out of the lakes a little more than a week earlier. When we came back two weeks later, it was full blown summer. Yesterday, while switching over the Gravely tractor from snow blower to mower, I was surrounded by a cloud of black flies, whereas two weeks earlier there was hardly an insect in sight. Here is an article on the Koppen climate classification system.
