The cold weather has slowed us down a bit. Only 675 miles were reported during the 10th week of our walk. We are still in China approx. 500 miles west of Hangzhou, China. Hangzhou is located in the middle part of south-east China. It is the capital and largest city of the Zhejiang Province with a population of 21.102 million people. Hangzhou is one of the Seven Ancient Capital Cities, and people lived there over 8,000 years ago. It has been famed as the Heaven on Earth since ancient times. In the 13th century Marco Polo reportedly said Hangzhou was the most beautiful and prosperous city in the world. In the late 1600s Hangzhou and Shanghai became the center of Roman Catholic missionary activity. In 1661 the Immaculate Conception Cathedral of Hangzhou was built and is still one of the oldest churches in China. During the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976) the cathedral was put to other uses but in 1982 the cathedral reopened as a church and is now protected as a Municipal Historic Site. It is currently the only Catholic Church within the city of Hangzhou. Following the takeover by the Communist Party in 1949, Catholic and Protestant missionaries were expelled from China. In 1957, the Chinese government established the Chinese Patriotic Catholic Association (CPA) which rejects the authority of the Holy See and appoints its own bishops and exercises control over doctrine. Today China is home to an estimated 12 million Catholics, the majority of whom worship outside the official CPA. There are roughly 40 bishops unordained by the CPA who operate unofficially, and recognize the authority of the Vatican. Put on warm clothes or move inside but keep exercising! You will be healthier, can eat more on Thanksgiving and will help us get home. Don’t forget the group walk at the Mall at 6:30 PM on Nov. 19 and Nov. 26 at 9:00 AM . Meet in front of Panera. KEEP MOVING-WE NEED THE MILES!
