The concept of Latin America originated in the nineteenth century - TopicsExpress

The concept of Latin America originated in the nineteenth century as a counter to imperialist America, but we are witnessing a gradual shift that places the notion of an America of the South center stage, as Porto Goncalves correctly points out. At the start of the Lulu government, South America became a new geopolitical space coinciding with the hegemonic crisis if the United States. This shift discards the anti-imperialist meaning that the concept of Latin America once had. - Raul Zibechi, The New Brazil: Regional Imperialism and the New Democracy, p199
