The consequences of NSA leaks: increases in traffic for secure anonymous services When people find out that the NSA is spying on them through mainstream US internet companies what do you expect them to do? Abandon ship? Yep me too. Clearly most people (myself included) will keep using google et al. thinking that they don’t have anything to hide but those who either do have something to hide (I don’t mean illegal things here just things they consider sensitive) or those who simply don’t like the idea of the US government having access to their data will do something about it. In the month after the PRISM revelations DuckDuckGo – a search engine that offers zero tracking as a result of not storing cookies and using an encrypted connection – had a boom in business with 1.7million searches a day rising to 3million by the end of June. Secure email has had a similar boost with Silent Circle receiving a month on month revenue increase of 400% in July as a result of people switching to its secure services. The other option that is being used it to avoid US companies; in cloud computing Artmotion Switzerland’s largest hosting company has had a 45% increase in revenue - I wonder if Switzerland’s reputation for secrecy has something to do with it? Meanwhile on the other side forcasts are that the US cloud computing industry could lose anywhere between $21.5bn and $35bn in revenues over the next three years. theguardian/world/2013/jul/10/nsa-duckduckgo-gabriel-weinberg-prism ft/cms/s/0/9f02b396-fdf0-11e2-a5b1-00144feabdc0.html
