The current divide in the search for God and purpose of life is between conservative religion and modern spirituality. Modern spirituality encompasses reasoning and science. And so if sufficient evidence is produced by say paleontology or quantum physics, modern spirituality will consider and debate in an attempt to reconcile with their own understanding. On the other hand you can produce 200 years of research and thinking compiled into a huge tome to the conservative religionists and it will be rejected out of hand. There is no rational solution to unity of purpose between these two approaches and thinking there is one is in my opinion an illusion.
