The date is April 2nd on a Wednesday. The time is 12:30 when I pull into the parking lot for the Kayak trail head, on Walker Ranch, where I gear-up and head down the trail. About 20 mins from the parking lot, roughly 200 yards below the falls, I start working my way up the River. It was only partially overcast when I first got there, but sun hadn’t been out quite long enough to warm things up above 36F. So I dabbled around the few slower pools, and along the edges. I also took a few scenery shots. When I got above the falls I found some nice trout holding next to a sand bar under the bridge. I hooked two, but didn’t get them in hand. I noticed that some were sipping, so changed up to a #16 black gnat with a #18 tungsten juju beatis point fly, no takers so I continued past the bridge. The next spot I picked was a crystal clear, swirling pool behind a log pile that had several trout that were also sipping little midges off the top. So I threw them my dry-dropper, but they had too long time to analyze those flies as they slowly floated by. Switched back to the #18 San Jaun worm with a #18 egg just to see if that’d interest them, but they didn’t bat a fin. Moved up to a seam trailing from the side of a boulder, where I LDR-ed one and landed two little rainbows on the egg. I hopped up to the next seam with a few more bites on the egg and another in hand. By then it started spitting snow and my hands were freezing, thank goodness for expired Hotties! The final spot I hit, before the trail started winding back up to the parking lot, was too nice to pass up. Out of the closest seam I had one more LDR, with the next cast I hooked and landed the best one of the day on the worm. The fat, wet flakes had really started flying and my feet were frozen. A perfect end to a perfect day. -Allie
