The day before Thanksgiving, the kids and I volunteer with Community Servings in Jamaica Plain to deliver Thanksgiving meals to terminally ill patients. We started this when Tyson was 7, TJ, 4, and Trinity 3– its one of the few ways Ive found in Boston where they welcome a family with small children to serve. We usually show up at 9am for a short orientation, collect our pre-packaged meals made specifically for the clients keeping their dietary needs in mind, then we drive to their homes and deliver them. All the clients know to expect meal deliveries so theyre incredibly happy to see us–especially the kids in the midst of their suffering. In the past, weve made card/ encouraging notes to slip into their meals and Community Servings has always been really open to us doing so.
