The days of advertising have changed drastically over the last - TopicsExpress

The days of advertising have changed drastically over the last decade, it’s undeniable. One of the more discreet (but effective) ways companies choose to advertise is through product placement. It’s hardly subtle in our favourite shows and movies and it’s largely effective. For example, House of Cards is littered with Apple products (amongst other companies). Product placement is a sort of type of subliminal messaging- we aren’t always conscious of our knowledge of the products our favourite TV shows display, but the product sticks with us. It’s there, and once you start to notice a show is guilty of product placement it often seems a little overboard. Why is this method so important in recent years? Speculation online suggests that it’s because of the era of on-demand TV. We can often skip commercials, which is where products solely used to be advertised. Rather than interrupt our programming, companies choose advertising during shows, and if they’re really good at it- you may not even consciously notice. That’s the point of good advertising, whether it be Apple or not, the viewer remains unaware that advertising affects them. We have to study our purchasing habits to understand how product placement and advertising affects us. Next time you’re watching TV look for different brands. I find that Apple is a very common culprit, with some of my favourite TV personalities using their products. It’s a brilliant strategy and it’s shown to be very effective, even if you aren’t aware of it.
