The dictionary of Biblical Phrases When they were escaped, then they knew that the island was called Melita. Acts 28v1 Finally the whole company of the ship that Paul was sailing was on, on his voyage to Italy had reached land safely. They all escaped drowning in the storm. The Authorised version says that the Island was Melita, however Melita is in the Adriatic and it is almost certain that they had landed on Malta, at St Paul’s bay, where there stands a house said to be the very place were Paul stayed. The western part of the Island was civilized but the eastern part facing the storm was were the Uncivilised lived. The Uncivilised received the survivors and lit a fire to dry them all from the rain and cold. Paul helping to gather sticks for the fire was bitten by a snake. He shook it off into the fire. At first the people of the Island assumed that Paul was a murderer who had escaped the sea but now fate kills him by a venomous snake. They watched him and when he didn’t swell up and die they assumed he was a god. In that part of the Island there was a farm that belonged to Publius, who received us, (Paul Aristarcus and Luke) and lodged them for three days. Publius’s father was sick of a fever (Dysentery) and Paul healed him. Other people brought in their sick and were healed. The people gave to them honours and belongings to replace things they had lost in the storm.
