The duduk (doo-dook; Armenian: դուդուկ, traditionally known as ծիրանափող tsiranapogh), is a woodwind instrument indigenous to Armenia. Unlike other double reed instruments, such as the oboe or shawm, the duduk has a very large reed in proportion to its size. The unflattened reed and completely cylindrical (not conical) body of the instrument produce a sound closer to that of a clarinet or saxophone than to more commonly known double-reeds. UNESCO proclaimed the Armenian duduk and its music as a Masterpiece of the Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2005 and inscribed it in 2008.
