The dye is cast for this citys economy for the next 5 years. The road will be rocky and the economic terrain very rough. The Republican controlled State Legislature has set us up for a fall. The second largest employer in this County is the public school system. Now it is being systematically picked apart. These municipal school districts and charter school districts have no agenda to hire from within Memphis or Shelby County residents. The airport has become a ghost town and left very few available flights to get in and out of here with ease. Accordingly we will not be getting any major conventions or meetings that fill all the hotels any time soon. Over the past 15 years we have allowed the logistic and warehouse employers to utilize nothing but temporary labor, and as a result the unions (who generally fight for fair wages) have lost their traction and are floundering. When casinos start closing and leaving the area, then you know it is really bad. So now the question is who will step forward with an answer to the problem. It is not a problem that a Mayor can solve (no matter who the mayor might be), but a problem that must be handled by a team of great thinkers all working on one accord and moving as one unit.
