The easiest way to show the degree of parochialism in American - TopicsExpress

The easiest way to show the degree of parochialism in American literature is to point to the allergy we have toward foreign languages. We never listen to popular songs in other languages. And notwithstanding the popularity of films like Mexico’s Like Water for Chocolate and Germany’s The Lives of Others, we tend not to like movies with subtitles. If a successful movie is made in French, for instance, we’d rather wait for the Hollywood remake. In general, translation makes us uncomfortable, even though this country is a Babel of languages, with more than one hundred languages spoken just within one school district in Los Angeles or Queens.
